Starting as a small side project, my business on Etsy, A Jar of Pickles, has grown into a multi-6-figure enterprise. It all began with a suggestion from a friend to sell my designs on Etsy, and from there, I took the necessary steps to turn my passion into a profitable business.

Investing in Growth

As my sales started to become consistent, I decided to invest $200 in my business. This allowed me to improve my margins by buying cards and envelopes in bulk, as well as acquire equipment to streamline production and packaging. This initial investment set the stage for continued growth.

Finding the Right Path

When it came to expanding my business, I explored the option of wholesale. While many businesses in my industry focused on trade shows and big retailers, I took a different approach. I targeted smaller boutiques, cold pitching retailers via email, and prioritized direct-to-consumer sales. This strategic decision allowed me to establish strong relationships with retailers and grow my business at a manageable pace.

The Power of Instagram Stories

I discovered the untapped potential of Instagram Stories as a marketing tool. By consistently posting on Stories and experimenting with content, I was able to engage with my customers in a direct and authentic way. This led to increased engagement on Instagram and drove traffic to my website. Utilizing Stories as a testing ground for content ideas informed my overall marketing strategy.

Responding to Customer Demand

When my customers asked for new products, I listened. However, I waited until I could afford to diversify my product line. This allowed me to add items like enamel pins, keychains, and washi tape based on actual demand. By involving my customers in the product development process and keeping them updated, I cultivated a loyal customer base and maintained a high reorder rate.

Achieving Sustainable Growth

Unlike some entrepreneurs who take on loans or invest their own money to grow quickly, I prioritized sustainable growth. I expanded my product line only when my business revenue could support it. This approach ensured profitability and manageable cash flow, even during challenging times.

Building a Business on My Terms

By taking a slower and more deliberate approach to growth, I was able to build a successful business that aligns with my values and allows me to enjoy my life. This measured approach has given me the freedom and flexibility to run my business on my own terms.
