Here we go again. It’s not unusual to adjust and modify your strategy in response to the constantly changing algorithms and changes in social networks. (Who was the other Vine user? We wish we didn’t have.
TikTok may be banned in the United States, according to social media creators and marketers. The popular short-form video platform has been a major social media platform and has been credited for influencing cultural shifts and trends.
The privacy concerns of the Chinese-owned company have been a source of ongoing controversy in the U.S. TikTok’s parent company is currently being asked to either sell the company, or be banned from the United States.
Creators and users love TikTok because anyone can go viral, and build an audience, unlike other social media networks. Most companies now have a TikTok strategy. There are plenty of examples of TikTok helping to grow a business or making someone a full-time creator.
Many people in our Buffer community use our TikTok scheduling feature in their social media strategy. What would that mean for social media marketers? These are the questions we’ll try to answer.
What does the possible TikTok ban in the U.S. mean for Buffer users?
There are many unknowns about what TikTok’s ban in the U.S. would mean, and we don’t know what it would mean for Buffer.
The U.S. has never banned an app. The U.S. government and TikTok will decide what happens to Buffer users based in the United States. As we learn more, this blog post will be updated.
How can marketers prepare to face a TikTok ban
Although there are many unknowns, we know that you want to be prepared. These are some steps to take in order to prepare for the possibility of TikTok being banned.
1. All your TikTok videos are available for download
No matter what TikTok ban is, backing up your content is a smart idea. You don’t want any of the amazing videos you have created. You can access all your content from TikTok if you used Buffer to upload it.
You can also save your videos to your smartphone’s camera roll, or upload them to a cloud storage provider like Dropbox.
Download your TikTok videos by:
- Click the video that you wish to download
- Click the three dots at the bottom of the right corner
- Click “Save video”
A confirmation will appear that your video has been downloaded and when it has been saved.
You can also download videos to be able to share them on other social networks. This is a smart social media strategy we recommend.
2. Your audience should know where to find you elsewhere
TikTok may be the place where your audience is most active. You should tell them where they can find you in case they are unable to access it. You should make sure you have shared your top social networks and owned channels (like your website, link bio, and newsletter) so they can stay in touch.

3. Your bio should be updated with your new link
To make your TikTok profile an evergreen one, update the link in your bio. You might not be able update the link if TikTok is blocked. However, international viewers may still be able see the link and click through.

4. Your social media marketing strategy should evolve
TikTok should be part of your overall social marketing strategy. You will need to make changes if the app is not accessible by you or your followers. Along with TikTok, we recommend that you invest in the growth of a few social media platforms, such as Instagram and LinkedIn.
If you like short-form videos, then check out Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts. These are the top two platforms for sharing this content style.
The possibility of TikTok being banned is a friendly reminder about the importance of building an audience on platforms and services that you have greater control. This is a great time to update your website, set up a link in bio tool, and make sure you are maximizing your newsletter’s potential.
