It is finally here. After two years of waiting Instagram finally released its Reels API yesterday to all social media management platforms.

We were so happy that we immediately started building and are now…

Buffer now allows you to auto-publish Instagram Reels by scheduling and drafting.

You want to test it? For free, connect your Instagram account with Buffer. It works the same way as any other Buffer post. You can make drafts and publish them immediately or add them to your queue. They’ll be sent when you need.

Reels scheduling is currently available in our web app. It will soon be available on our mobile apps.

Ten reasons to schedule reels

We won’t lie to you, Reels are very exciting for us. There is a lot of evidence that Reels can dramatically increase your engagement, reach and following.

Is it all true? We decided to conduct our own analysis.

To determine the importance of video content, we looked at all the Instagram posts that we have published in this year. We searched the internet for solid evidence. Here are the results.

1 Reels generate 22% higher engagement than regular Instagram posts ( ).

Reels are actively promoted on Instagram. Reels are everywhere on Instagram, and they grab the attention of users. They are gaining so much attention.

2 68% of marketers plan to increase video activity on Instagram ( HTML3_ )

Marketing Charts asked 2897 marketers, most of whom work for small companies, if they intend to increase the amount of videos they publish.

A staggering 68 percent of Instagram users said that they would increase the amount of Instagram videos they publish. This compares to a 33% increase on TikTok, and only eight percent on Snapchat. Only 2 percent of marketers stated that they would reduce the number of Instagram videos they publish.

3 Reels Get More Engagement Than Traditional Instagram Videos ( source )

Conviva analyzed Instagram accounts from professional teams in the NFL league. They found that Instagram reels get 67 per cent more engagement than traditional IG videos.

One in five NFL clubs doesn’t have Reels available on the platform, despite this fact.

4) Reels is the most popular content on Instagram

Reels are everywhere on Instagram, which is why they get so many engagements, impressions and reach.

After performing a Hashtag Search and in the Reels feeds, you’ll find Reels under the Explore tab. You can also search via an audio search by clicking on any piece or music.

5) Instagram prioritizes videos over photos (source)

In 2021, Adam Mosseri (head of Instagram) stated that Instagram was no longer a photo-sharing platform. Instead, Instagram views itself as a short-form video platform, and will prioritize videos over images.

We decided to analyze the performance over the past year of Buffer Instagram videos in order to determine if Adam was right.

6 Videos generated 5.63% fewer comments than regular posts ( source )

Video content is more popular than text and our audience is much more likely to participate in the conversation. Reels increase our followers’ engagement and boost comments by 5.63% in 2022.

7) Reels have 25% higher chances of being saved ( source )

This is a surprise. We know reels drive engagement but we didn’t expect users would save them for later.

We shouldn’t be surprised, though. It’s not surprising that video content generates far more views, so it’s no surprise that these posts receive more saves. How many eyeballs can Reels attract? We looked at this next.

src=”https://buffer.com/resources/content/images/2022/07/IG-4–1-.png” class=”kg-image” alt=”Introducing Instagram Reels Auto-Publishing in Buffer” loading=”lazy” width=”1600″ height=”900″ srcset=”https://buffer.com/resources/content/images/size/w600/2022/07/IG-4–1-.png 600w, https://buffer.com/resources/content/images/size/w1000/2022/07/IG-4–1-.png 1000w, https://buffer.com/resources/content/images/2022/07/IG-4–1-.png 1600w” sizes=”(min-width: 720px) 720px”>

8 Buffer’s video content received 83% more views ( HTML3_ )

We almost doubled our views after posting a video. This confirms Adam Mosseri’s claim that Instagram is becoming a video-first platform. The algorithm favors video content and will promote it to its fans before regular posts.

Start sharing Reels to increase your visibility. What about likings?

9 Videos get 2.1x more likes than regular posts ( source )

Our Instagram videos averaged 209 likes per post. Regular image posts received just 101 likes.
