I’m a Travel Blogger – Here’s How I Survive as a Creator in a Competitive Market

January 10, 2024 By Walt wintertree

Setting yourself apart in a competitive market can be tough, but as a travel blogger and content creator, I’ve found ways to thrive. Despite entering the highly competitive travel industry at the worst possible time, I’ve managed to stay strong and grow my brand. In this post, I’ll share my top tips for surviving and potentially thriving in the cut-throat world of content creation.

I see opportunity in competition

Instead of letting fear deter me, I saw competition as an opportunity when entering the travel industry. Here’s how you can do the same:

1. Use it as a blueprint

When starting out, I used other travel creators as a blueprint for my content. By studying their work, I learned what my potential audience enjoyed and identified gaps in the market. This helped me build on existing content and improve what was being offered.

2. Shift your mindset

In a crowded industry, smaller creators like myself have the advantage of being recognized. Brands now value engagement, style, brand alignment, and quality over just follower count. This shift in mindset has given me the confidence and audacity to thrive in a competitive industry. I focus on creating high-quality content that resonates with my audience, and it has paid off.

3. Become more innovative

Competition pushes you to be your best. The fear of being overshadowed by new creators or having your work go unnoticed drives you to find creative ways to stand out. This constant drive for innovation has made me a better creator and helped me stay ahead in the game.

How I am surviving and “possibly” thriving in a saturated market

Here are the strategies that have helped me survive and thrive in a competitive market:

1. I found my unique edge

Instead of focusing on a specific niche, I found my unique edge that sets me apart from other creators. I highlight the lesser-known parts of a country and its culture, going off the beaten path to create deeper connections with my audience. Finding your unique edge gives you the freedom to explore various niches and adapt as you grow.

2. I am trying to remain authentic and remember my ‘why’

Imposter syndrome and self-doubt are common among creators, but staying true to my purpose and brand has kept me going. I constantly remind myself of why I started creating travel content and who I am creating for. This helps me stay focused and authentic, even when faced with challenges or the temptation to pivot.

3. I am offering as much value as I can

Regardless of how many views or followers I have, I always strive to provide value to my audience. I give my 100% in every piece of content I create, ensuring that at least one person finds value in it. By consistently delivering high-quality content, I cut through the noise and build a loyal audience.

4. I put myself out there

Marketing myself as a creator is just as important as marketing a business. I’ve learned to pitch myself to brands, share my wins, and give myself as much visibility as possible. By joining affiliate and influencer platforms, I’ve landed partnerships that align with my audience and brand.

5. I collaborate with other creators

Collaboration is key in the content creation community. By viewing others as peers instead of competition, I’ve built healthy relationships and expanded my reach. Collaborating with other creators has introduced me to new audiences and opened doors for paid opportunities.

6. I have set a standard for myself

Consistency is essential in building a successful brand. I’ve created a content calendar that outlines the type and frequency of content I’ll produce. By setting a standard for myself, I maintain momentum and ensure that my audience knows what to expect from me.

Thriving in a competitive market is not impossible. As a new creator, you have the advantage of a clear path and valuable data on what your target audience wants. Use this to your advantage, stay true to your brand, and don’t be afraid to stand out. With the right strategies and mindset, you can thrive and leave your mark in the content creation world.
