How to Schedule Posts to Bluesky and Cross-post from Other Platforms

Bluesky: The Rising Contender in the World of Twitter Alternatives

Bluesky, the decentralized, invite-only social network created by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, is quickly gaining popularity as a major contender in the race for the top Twitter alternative. With its user-friendly interface, high degree of timeline control, and the ability to still pull through headlines with links, it’s no wonder that people are flocking to this platform. In fact, Bluesky reached 1 million users in September 2023 and may experience another spike in popularity with the closure of another Twitter alternative, Pebble/T2.

Why Schedule Posts to Bluesky?

If you’re new to Bluesky or considering signing up, you may be wondering how to effectively manage your social media presence on this platform. One highly requested feature is the ability to schedule posts to Bluesky using a social media management system like Buffer. While Buffer is currently working on integrating Bluesky as a channel, there’s a simple workaround that allows you to cross-post content from other platforms to Bluesky and schedule it with Buffer.

Introducing Shortcuts: Apple’s Powerful App for Automation

Shortcuts is an app preinstalled on iPhones that enables you to link various actions together to create shortcuts and automation. Whether you want to set an alarm and enable Do Not Disturb, send a text to all event attendees that you’re running late, or turn your favorite videos into GIFs, Shortcuts has got you covered. Best of all, these shortcuts are shareable with iCloud, so anyone can make their shortcuts available to others.

Multipost With Buffer: Cross-Posting and Scheduling Made Easy

Buffer CEO Joel Gascoigne and Staff Product Manager Brandon Green have come up with a simple yet effective iOS app, Shortcuts, that allows you to cross-post content from other platforms to Bluesky and schedule it with Buffer. This powerful tool even checks your character count to ensure you don’t exceed Bluesky’s 300-character limit.

How to Set Up the Multipost With Buffer Shortcut

Setting up the Multipost With Buffer shortcut is quick and easy. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Open the Shortcut on Your iPhone

Open the Multipost With Buffer shortcut on your iPhone using this link. This will take you to the Shortcuts app where you can set up the shortcut.

Step 2: Connect the Buffer Channel

Choose the Buffer channel you want to cross-post to Bluesky from the options available. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or Mastodon are recommended choices for this shortcut. Tap Next when you’re done.

Step 3: Enter Your Bluesky Handle

Copy your Bluesky handle from your profile on the Bluesky app or website. Paste it into the Shortcuts app in the designated text box. Tap Next to proceed.

Step 4: Enter Your Bluesky-Generated Password

Generate an app password on the Bluesky app or website, and copy the 16-character password. Paste it into the Shortcuts app when prompted. Tap Add Shortcut to continue.

Step 5: Create a Post in Shortcuts

Type your post into the dialogue box that appears in the Shortcuts app. Tap Done when you’re finished.

Step 6: Approve Access to Buffer

The first time you use the shortcut, you’ll be asked to grant access to Buffer. Tap Allow to proceed. This step only needs to be done once.

Step 7: Choose When to Share Your Post

You have three options for sending your post: Share now, Share Next, or Add to Queue. Choose the option that suits your preferences. Remember, if you want to schedule your posts, select Share Next or Add to Queue.

Step 8: Allow Access to Bluesky

Tap Allow when prompted to give the shortcut permission to send your post to Bluesky. This step only needs to be done once.

Scheduling and Cross-Posting Made Simple

From now on, scheduling and cross-posting to Bluesky will be a breeze. Just follow these steps:

Step 1: Open Shortcuts and Select Multipost With Buffer

Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone and tap on the Multipost With Buffer shortcut.

Step 2: Enter Your Post

Type your post into the text box that appears in Shortcuts.

Step 3: Choose When to Share

Select when you want to share your post: immediately, next in the queue, or at the next available spot. Tap Done to complete the process.

That’s it! Your post will now appear on the Buffer social channel you selected and on Bluesky. Enjoy the convenience of scheduling and cross-posting to Bluesky with the help of Shortcuts!
