In recent years, the LinkedIn team has focused on creators, who have been referred to by Creative Review as “unlikely Champions of Creativity”. The platform has become a popular destination for those looking to build their personal or business brand with features like LinkedIn Top Voices and Creator Mode.
Justin Welsh, for example, has seen huge success with LinkedIn. He’s gained audiences of hundreds of thousands. You won’t find a better example than this one if you are looking for something more relatable. I have gained more than 10,000 LinkedIn followers by sharing my career and work advice.
LinkedIn can be a lucrative platform for creators. This is especially true if you have a wide range of expertise that you want to share. Not just for professionals. This article will explore the worlds of LinkedIn creators. We’ll look at who they are, what makes them special, and how you can become one.
What is a LinkedIn creator
LinkedIn creators are thought leaders in a certain industry who share organic content to a targeted professional audience. The most successful LinkedIn creators can be divided into two main categories:
- Professionals with a large digital footprint, and a team of people to help them create content (like Arianna or Simon Sinek).
- People who devote time to their personal brand and content strategy in order to build an engaged audience (like Jon Stephen Stansel and Mandy Fransz).
The expertise of professionals who are already established is essential, regardless of how they share it. You are likely to fall into the second category and starting from scratch will be more difficult. You’ll have to do the following in order to grow your LinkedIn personal brand.
- Share your expertise on LinkedIn to assist others in achieving similar results
- Engage with other creators’ content to support them
- Attend and host events to get involved in your community
This is a worthwhile but significant investment. LinkedIn’s 900+ million users are a huge (and targeted) audience. This, combined with the algorithm update, is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to grow an audience.
Why become a LinkedIn Creator?
LinkedIn’s large user base makes it a great choice for anyone looking to expand their audience, whether for their business or career. LinkedIn has a few other features that make it worth creating content on its platform.
- A clear growth path is offered by an algorithm
- As one of the few social networks that has a clearly defined target audience, Professionals. They may have a wide range of experience, expertise and industries, but all promote their professional lives in some way.
- Newsletters, Audio Events and Livestreams are just a few of the tools available to creators.
You can grow as long you keep your engagement up through comments and responses.
How you can become a successful LinkedIn creator
There are many different ways to define success. But if you’re looking to build an engaged audience on LinkedIn there are three key elements that should be considered: Relevance Expertise and Engagement.
- Relevance : The relevance to your niche (your audience) of the posts you make.
- Expertise : Your knowledge in the subject matter of your content
- Engagement : the presence of “meaningful remarks” from people that have shown an interest in similar conversations.

Create a niche for
It’s a cliche to pick a niche, but it is essential for growth on LinkedIn. LinkedIn’s algorithm requires that content be relevant for the person who is viewing it. What is the best way to create relevant content? Stick to a specific niche.
This is your opportunity to experiment if you haven’t yet chosen a topic. We have written about choosing a niche and even included advice from other creators.
Switch Creator Mode
You can focus on creating content on LinkedIn by switching your profile into Creator Mode. This is the feature that makes LinkedIn attractive to creators.
You can get the following things in Creator mode:
- The “connect button” will convert to a “follow button”, meaning that you’ll gain followers along with your connections. You can copy the Follow link and share it externally.
- The Creator Mode can also help you be discovered, since LinkedIn might feature you as an suggested creator.
- Above the About section, you get a section called Featured that displays articles, links, and posts you have pinned.
- Select up to five hashtags to display on your profile.
- Get deeper analytics on how your content performs across the platform.
- Start a Livestream, a Livestream, an Audio Event or a Newsletter.
Creator Mode is easy to use, so I suggest using as many features as you can. LinkedIn Creators: Learn more.
Improve your LinkedIn profile
Treat your LinkedIn profile with care. It is a valuable piece of real estate which allows you to create a good first impression.
You can optimize your LinkedIn profile in four easy steps:
- Select a profile photo that clearly shows your face. A neutral-colored background with a simple headshot is ideal for LinkedIn. ( Bonus You may add frames to your LinkedIn profile to show that you are #Hiring or #OpenToWork.)
- Create a professional, catchy headline. This section allows you up to 220 character, but it is not excessive to use 3 to 4 phrases to cover all that you do. Create a mission statement that highlights your niche. Then, mention any certifications or other relevant information.
- Make your header a billboard. As the first thing a visitor sees when landing on your profile (even before seeing your profile photo), you want it to catch their attention. Select a photo that highlights key points you want others to know about yourself.
- Create a summary that will sell. Your About section gives you the opportunity to showcase your personality. It shouldn’t be a copy and paste of your resume. You can tell a story about yourself, share key lessons or describe the type of job you are looking for.
As you find your niche, full optimization will come with time. Learn how to turn your LinkedIn profile into a powerful landing site for your business.
Create community by building connections
You want to fill your LinkedIn network with people who are likely to engage and be interested in the content you share. Start with at least 501 contacts, as LinkedIn will display a neat “500+” rather than your exact number. This gives the impression that you are well connected and that many people recognize you.
Don’t be afraid to connect to people as you progress in the network. As long as your profile is as detailed as possible, most people will accept LinkedIn connections. They may also reject your request for a connection – and LinkedIn could restrict your account if you do this too frequently.
If you are still building up your LinkedIn content and engagement and have few connections, you should hold off on contacting people you do not know. You can start with family and friends, then move on to colleagues and schoolmates.
Focus on second-degree contacts once you have exhausted your first-degree connections. These people are in your network of connections – having enough connections with someone can help you on the road to acceptance.
You can also add a request for connection introducing yourself as well as why you want to connect with that person.
Consistently publish content
LinkedIn understands you better if you post more often.
Instead of trying to reach a large audience, your content should provide insights that resonate with a particular professional audience. The new algorithm will reward content that is based on your own career experience and includes advice at the end.
Consider using different formats on LinkedIn to make your profile stand out. You can upload videos or carousels.
You’ll probably run into people who are creating similar content to reach a similar audience, no matter how unique your niche may seem. Wes Kao CEO of Maven calls this “spiky perspective” which is insightful and challenging content on your niche. This type of content is highly sought after.
Interact with people often
LinkedIn is looking for content that will spark conversation. The best way to achieve this is by using comments. It’s just a formula: a post with many comments equals high algorithmic visibility.
Two of the best ways to achieve this are:
- Encourage action by promoting calls to response
- Tag other people who are interested in the same topics as you. They will engage with your post and provide additional insights.
To build relationships with others, you should leave comments on their posts often. If you have connected with and followed the right people, this will be a natural thing to do.
Create a niche for yourself on LinkedIn by showcasing your unique perspective
LinkedIn has made the title “creator” a badge for honor. By showcasing your unique professional persona, you can accelerate your career and open up a wealth of opportunities.
Use the massive customer base and rewarding algorithm to build an audience of people who share your views.
Are you ready for the spotlight and to take on the role of a ‘creator?’ Choose your niche today, switch to the Creator Mode and create your next LinkedIn posting (in Buffer of course).
