You’ll be able to sell more products if your product is less expensive.
This is not always the case. According to Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management research, some consumers consider price to be a good indicator of quality.
Consumers could associate your brand with low quality products if your prices are low. This could lead to lower sales. JCPenney, a US retailer, saw its sales fall by 25% after it stopped offering coupon codes and sales.
It all comes down to psychology.
Although consistently low prices offer greater value to consumers, we can’t resist the lure of big discounts (even though they may be completely arbitrary).
This helps to explain why flash sales are so popular in e-commerce marketing strategies. I have compiled seven flash sale examples of real brands to inspire you next sale campaign.

What is a Flash Sale?
Flash sales are a limited-time promotion or discount.
Flash sales are not limited in time, but they usually last for 48 hours and sometimes just an hour.
Flash sales are designed to tempt shoppers into impulse buying in order to take advantage of a limited-time price drop.
Brands might have secondary goals for launching a flash sales, such as:
Building brand awareness; Increasing customer loyalty; or Driving sales of non-discounted goods.
Let’s now look at seven flash sales examples and learn what lessons we can take from them.
1. Bed Bath & Beyond
Have you ever been excited about a sale only to find out that the reality was not as appealing as your expectations?
It’s not uncommon. LoyaltyLion research shows that one in every two consumers feels disappointed by Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. While 58 percent of those surveyed feel that the best products are never on sale.
It’s not what you want to do. It’s important to clearly define the products that consumers can buy at a discounted price.
This is what Bed Bath & Beyond does in this area:
The flash sale example shows that discounts are available for “top brands”. The retailer then lists the brands that are included in the flash sale.
If you really wanted a set of Calvin Klein pillowscases, don’t be discouraged at Bed Bath & Beyond. There’s no mention of CK anywhere in the announcement.
You can reduce the chance of your customers being disappointed if you give as much detail upfront. Sales are supposed to be positive.
2. Scout & Co
Sales can be an effective marketing strategy. Promotions used to be at key times throughout the year, such as early January or the height of summer. But now it’s almost surprising that you open your email and don’t see any kind of discount.
It’s easy for customers to forget about sales emails. In a week, there will be another.
It is in your best interest to concentrate attention. Scout & Co focuses its flash sale on a single brand to engage customers and drive action.
This approach has its pros and cons. Mini Rodini is not a favorite of most parents.
However, if you are a fan of the Swedish childrenswear brand, this is a compelling offer that you won’t want to miss.
The key is to strike the right balance. You need to target a niche that appeals enough to a broad audience without making it too general. This could be one brand, a product category or even a specific product.
3. Macy’s
Macy’s goes one step beyond Scout & Co. Instead of offering a discount for a single brand, the department store giant offers multiple flash sales each day, each targeting a different product type.
We get a huge discount on all beauty products the first day.
Macy’s will announce a flash sale on jackets and coats on the next day:
This is a great way to get maximum attention. You can expect more emails to come once you have received the first one.
Even if the first two sales were disappointing, you will still be interested in the third and fourth (and fifth) to see if it offers a significant discount on that silk jumpsuit you have been eyeing for months.
However, flash sales are targeted at a particular niche. This means that people who are interested are more likely to click.
4. Blue Apron
The success of your flash sale will not depend on the call to action you choose. However, strong CTAs can increase clicks and encourage customers to buy.
Your copywriter will find it difficult to choose the right CTA.
There are many conflicting opinions about how to make an effective and engaging call-to-action in marketing. Quicksprout explains in one article:
An orange CTA helped SAP increase its conversion rate one-third. Performanceable also found that a red CTA improved SAP’s conversion rate by 21%.
What does this tell us? What does this tell us?
While there may not be a right or wrong answer to CTAs, I do like the way Blue Apron did this email launch for a flash sale.
Instead of sticking with the generic “Shop Now” phrase, it gives the idea of gamification. Flash sales can also be enhanced by the phrase “Beat The Clock”.
5. Chubbies
Remember that I mentioned 600 words ago a survey which basically stated that many consumers believe flash sales don’t include the products they really want to purchase.
Flash sales are a great way to get rid of old stock or end-of line stock. However, you won’t be able to sell the most sought-after products.
If you have other reasons for selling a limited-time product, such as increasing brand awareness, attracting new customers or loyalty, it may make sense to offer discounts on more appealing products.
This is exactly what Chubbies does at Chubbies:
Menswear brand menswear makes flash sales more appealing by emphasizing that it applies to its most loved shorts.
Also, this allows Chubbies to offer a more relaxed discount. Although a 20% savings is not something to be sneeze at, it’s still a significant reduction from the 40+% offered by flash sales. If you’re buying a product that you truly want, a savings of one-fifth can be significant.
6. ColourPop Cosmetics
Have you ever seen a special offer that sounds amazing, only to find out that it wasn’t what you were expecting?
But you’re not alone. According to Instantly’s audience and insights company, half of consumers believe that some discounts and promotions are misleading.
Customers shouldn’t feel like you’re trying too hard to ruin your brand’s reputation. ColourPop Cosmetics demonstrates how to make your offer as simple and clear as possible.
The brand’s message is concisely stated in four lines of copy:
The duration of the flash saleThe discount offeredThe products included in saleThe minimum price
These key points should be explained at the top of your launch email to reduce the chance of shoppers feeling confused while browsing your flash sale.
7. Bath & Body Works
Marketing is not a safe field, as I have already mentioned.
ColourPop is open to all the cards and explains every aspect of its promotion. Bath & Body Works, however, chooses to hide its flash sale under mystery.
It tells us when and where the sale is taking place:
This is another great example of FOMO: fear of missing an amazing offer compels one to click.
Bath & Body Works also imposes a limit on orders to make it seem like it cannot afford to run this promotion. This is because the offer is so appealing, customers should be discouraged from purchasing too many.
Conclusion
Flash sales are only as effective as their promotional strategy.
If you don’t effectively promote your product, you can offer 99 percent discount on your bestselling product.
There are many ways to sell flash sales, as the examples show. I would recommend that you choose an angle before you start.
It doesn’t matter if you are offering a sitewide discount for one hour or a 60 percent discount on a single product category or brand for two days. Choosing an angle will make it easier to promote your flash sales in a way that resonates well with your target audience.
